Oh boy, what was I in for?
Maxine M., Special Education teacher, Retired
He had a twinkle in his eye and a smile from ear to ear and a mischievous grin. Oh boy, what was I in for?
I first met Louie when I was a substitute teacher at Spring Ridge Elementary School in Elkhorn. I had just retired after teaching 35 years, with 29 at Elkhorn High School as a Special Education teacher. Louie was in kindergarten so it was quite a change for me.
It was time for physical education class, so I went with Louie to the gym. The PE teacher had a big red parachute that she unfolded and all the children held the edges in a big circle. The students were instructed to raise and lower the chute, move left or right, walk forward or backward. All at once, quicker than lightning, I discovered that Louie had disappeared under the chute. What is a substitute teacher to do but go after him! So, I crawled under the parachute to find Louie. There he was in the middle with a big grin on his face. I could hardly keep from laughing, but we managed to both crawl out. Then we had a little chat about following the teacher’s directions. And that’s how I came to know Louie. His smile and boundless energy are catching and I’m hooked.
The Little King and his Marshmallow Kingdom is a treasure. Congratulations for writing it and the illustrations are just perfect.

Great story,
My one year old daughter and I met Louie IV in the St. Roberts Church lobby one Sunday. Little Louie’s father and I are friends, so we were chatting while Louie IV was doing his impression of Father Shane. It was cute, he gave Cate a blessing by touching her head and making the Sign of the Cross.
He’s a great kid who is loved very much.

Hi, my name is Lisa Sturms and I live in Muscatine, Iowa. I am a teacher at Central Middle School, and I also work part time at a restaurant called The Missipi Brewing Company. I was working a few weeks ago, when a soccer team came into our restaurant. I had the privilege of waiting on this large group of people, including very polite young soccer players. Two of the girls eventually were sitting at the bar talking to me about favorite books they have read and just life in general. Being a reading teacher, talking about books is one of my favorite subjects. Your daughter was one of those girls. She told me about her brother and this story. I knew it was a book I wanted to add to my collection. After reading it, I will definitely share this story with my Sixth Grade ELA students.
Please let Mia know that I did order this book, and I love it. She is a wonderful young lady who I truly enjoyed visiting with. I hope her soccer team will some day make their way back to Muscatine and to the Brew.
Thank you for sharing your story.
